I will call this list BIG PHARMA and will point out that there are 201 companies in the list – serving (for convenience) about 2 billion pharmacy goers (might be more – I’m not sure). So, a very large, very lucrative, very difficult market to navigate resulting in a player-to-audience ratio of 1 company for every 10 million consumers (simply divide 2 billion consumers by 200 companies to derive that ratio). Now, a carefully concealed fact about the current structure of the pharmaceutical industry is that all companies in the list below only deal with the last chemical step (N-1 to N) of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process. All steps until N-1 are outsourced to factories in CHINDIA where labor is cheap and prices are low. Pharma companies do the minimum amount of physical work they can, maintaining their hegemony with patents and government issued marketing authorizations. So the resulting situation is like a reverse tragedy of the commons, very little product with a lot of regulation.
